The Parisian cabaret “Le Chat Noir” was opened in the district of Montmartre in 1881 and had already made history by the time of its closure in 1897 after the death of its owner and founder, Rodolphe Salis. The painter and poster designer Théophile Alexandre Steinlen worked with Salis, designing the cabaret’s entrance sign, the “Le Chat Noir” magazine and the legendary poster from 1896 featuring the large black cat. There are a number of versions of this design with varying text; on offer here is the large-format original poster.
