Born in Switzerland in 1907, Herbert Matter studied in Paris, where he worked with Ozenfant and Cassandre.
He returned to Switzerland in 1932, and between 1934 and 1936 he designed a series of advertising posters for the “Schweizerische Verkehrszentrale”, the former Swiss tourism agency, which received international attention.
His use of photomontage and typography made Matter the founder of the modern photo poster. In 1935 he moved to New York, where he opened a photography studio.
He worked for clients including Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Knoll, taught at Yale University and worked on designs for the Guggenheim Museum. At this year’s auction, there are a number of highly prized intaglio-print posters by Matter up for bid.
