The French artist Charles Loupot spent a considerable part of his youth in Switzerland. He learned about lithography at J.E. Wolfensberger in Zurich and created his first posters for fashion stores such as PKZ, Gebr. Loeb and Grieder around 1917. In this poster for Cointreau liqueur, Loupot deliberately used the strict style of the Swiss object poster but also employed the character of Pierrot which had first been used in Cointreau advertisements by Tamagno in 1898 and later by Mercier. The poster is rendered in the orange-yellow colour of the liqueur, and Loupot achieved the shading effects with special lithography techniques. The poster on offer features the rarer of the two Loupot designs for Cointreau. This 1930 version with the female figure is considered a rarity.
