Emil Cardinaux belonged to the Bernese circle of innovative Swiss painters centred around Ferdinand Hodler, Max Buri and Cuno Amiet. After training with the Secessionist Franz von Stuck in Munich and a visit to Paris, where he became acquainted with the avant-garde of French painting, he returned to Switzerland. His more than 130 poster designs are characterised by great artistic quality and innovation, as we can see in his famous travel posters for Zermatt, the Bernese Oberland and the Grisons and his advertisements for Chocolat Villars, Bally and PKZ. This 1915 poster for the Chur-Arosa railway conveys the artist’s love of the mountains, featuring a beautiful winter view of Arosa with the mountaintops illuminated by the last golden rays of the setting sun.
